MONTEVIDEO Clinic

Baron Maurice de Rothschild Addiction Research and Treatment Institute

Doctors’ visit

Every morning, you have a meeting with the medical team to discuss your treatment, activities and outings.
Activity leaders will propose the day’s programme. They are also available
to assist you with various administrative or personal formalities you may need
to accomplish – and even have a coffee with you.
You have the possibility of talking to a psychologist or consulting a doctor or a nurse at any time during the day.

Medical treatment

The main objective of the medical team is to determine and relieve the permanent discomfort suffered by the user. To do this, doctors establish a pharmacological treatment in order to treat the disorders arising from chronic usage, regulate the patient’s mood and, as a result, stabilise his condition.

The aim is not simply to “wean the patient off” the toxic product but to enable him to escape the entanglement of using substances as durably as possible. This treatment stems from daily observation work and dialogue between the patient and team of carers.

Psychological monitoring

Psychological monitoring is the second mainstay of the Montevideo Clinic therapeutic framework. It enables the psychological situation of the patient to be assessed and his needs and weak points identified.

Interviews with the psychotherapist are frequent. It does not involve establishing “classic therapy” but setting up a patient / therapist dialogue concerning the addiction and the condition of the user. The objective is to ultimately demystify the user’s relationship with the substance or behaviour and re-establish for him a viewpoint of his addiction that is autonomous, critical and global.

Activities

You will receive a weekly schedule of activities when you arrive at Montevideo Clinic. According to your aptitudes and preferences, a coach will organise with you a personalised, tailored daily programme.

• Postural and respiratory gymnastics (group and individual sessions)

• Tennis, cycling, rowing machine, jogging, basket-ball, canoeing

• Relaxation

• Swimming

• Singing (group and individual sessions)

• Plastic arts

• Writing workshop

• Creative workshop

• Culinary workshop (buying food, preparation and tasting)

• Animated film workshop

• Cinema, exhibitions, walks and outings as a group

These activities are an integral part of the therapy and cure. They enable patients to experience simple pleasures again (the pleasure of creating, pushing back boundaries, etc.) and divert attention from the thought of the product or addictive behaviour. Over time, the patient stops focussing on the substance or object and his conscience is gradually liberated. In addition, discussion groups are arranged every week between patients.

Coaches

There are two underlying objectives to the role of coaches and the place occupied by activities in the Clinic’s therapeutic framework:

• the numerous different coaches and activity leaders, which enables patients
to be monitored carefully on an individual basis day-by-day,

• the creation of a context of exchange via the various activities, which offer
the patient the possibility of expressing what he feels in a different manner
to the traditional setting of an office.

The information collected by coaches and activity leaders is essential to the medical and psychological monitoring of patients.
